  • Understand how cultural differences and values influence North American academic writing expectations.
  • Learn about strategies and tools that can help them to communicate their ideas more effectively in a variety of contexts.
  • Practice using these tools to work with lexical bundles, academic voice, and source use.

SASC Celebrates Graduate & Professional Students!

Stop by the Student Academic Success Center (SASC) for individually wrapped sweet treats – our way of saying THANK YOU to you for making a difference at CMU!  In 2007, the Scottish Highland Terrier was named the official mascot of the University. The SASC recognizes all of our graduate students for their confidence and independence, which is very much like the fearless diehard spirit of our Scotty.

  • Interrogate ideas about professional identity in a second language classroom, specifically an English speaking setting
  • Understand how identities and ideologies in second languages are formed
  • Practice writing and speaking with confidence, clarity and fluency
  • Operationalize cultural and linguistic nuance in daily dialogues
  • Investigate cultural identities
  • Identify skill sets

  • Explain meta-cognitive awareness and its role in academic achievement.
  • Recognize the importance of mindset and strategies for developing a growth mindset.

  • Understand types of procrastination and evidence-based strategies for overcoming them.
