Starter Phrases for Your Introduction Section

Often, researchers have to convince other people that their work is important, relevant, or novel. And while researchers’ subject matter varies from person to person, experts use similar words and phrases — “lexical bundles” — to describe their work’s importance, relevance, and novelty.

In this handout, you’ll learn some common phrases that help you explain:

  • Why the work you’re doing is significant;
  • Today’s current practices within your field;
  • How the field’s current practices are insufficient or incomplete;
  • Your strategy to address those shortcomings.
