Description
NotebookLM is a research and writing assistant and note-taking tool that allows you to upload sources and create custom notebooks to interact with using Google’s Gemini AI models. Upload PDFs, websites, videos, audio files, Google Docs, and more, and NotebookLM will help you summarize, make connections between sources, and generate new ideas.
NotebookLM can even condense information from your sources into a conversational podcast format!
When logged in with your CMU account, sources, prompts, and responses are never used to train Google’s AI models.
The university-provided version of ChatGPT Edu, Microsoft Copilot, and Google Gemini are approved for use with University data classified as Public, Private, or Restricted, including FERPA-protected student information, in accordance with applicable University policies and data classification requirements. Certain regulated data types, including payment card information (PCI), HIPAA-protected health information (PHI), Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI), and data subject to the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act (GLBA), may require additional contractual, regulatory, or security review before use. Prior to processing these data types with any AI service, users should consult the University Contracts Office by submitting a software request form explaining the use case.
In addition to ChatGPT Edu, Microsoft Copilot, and Google Gemini, Carnegie Mellon University provides access to additional approved AI models and services through the CMU AI Gateway. The AI Gateway supports both experimentation and production use of large language models through a unified interface with built-in support for model selection, team management, and budget tracking. If a required model is not currently available, a request can be submitted to Computing Services for review.
