ChatGPT Edu
Access
Description
ChatGPT Edu is an advanced AI-powered chatbot that can help you synthesize information, summarize complex topics, conduct research, and generate new content, including text, code, and images. Your paid ChatGPT Edu subscription provides unlimited access to core features using the Fast and Mini models.
Note: Your ChatGPT Edu License does not include direct access to the OpenAI API. Instead, CMU provides API access to OpenAI models through the AI Gateway Service.
Faculty and staff review the options available and decide which ChatGPT subscription plan is the best fit for you.
ChatGPT Edu offers:
- FERPA-compliance – ChatGPT Edu is the only licensing option that meets FERPA requirements.
- Simplified billing – CMU community members will pay for licenses using an Oracle string.
The university-provided version of ChatGPT Edu, Microsoft Copilot, and Google Gemini are approved for use with University data classified as Public, Private, or Restricted, including FERPA-protected student information, in accordance with applicable University policies and data classification requirements. Certain regulated data types, including payment card information (PCI), HIPAA-protected health information (PHI), Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI), and data subject to the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act (GLBA), may require additional contractual, regulatory, or security review before use. Prior to processing these data types with any AI service, users should consult the University Contracts Office by submitting a software request form explaining the use case.
In addition to ChatGPT Edu, Microsoft Copilot, and Google Gemini, Carnegie Mellon University provides access to additional approved AI models and services through the CMU AI Gateway. The AI Gateway supports both experimentation and production use of large language models through a unified interface with built-in support for model selection, team management, and budget tracking. If a required model is not currently available, a request can be submitted to Computing Services for review.
If you choose to set up a ChatGPT Free, Plus, Pro, or Teams account, only enter information that you would share publicly online. Open AI may retain your prompt and responses to train its AI models.
