Pay Statements

Current pay information, including pay statements and tax documents (e.g., W-2 form), is available in Workday. Visit My HR Toolkit for information on Workday, quick guides, and other resources for accessing pay documentation.

First, confirm that your primary address is updated in Workday and that you have submitted tax withholding elections with your current address. If your primary address in Workday is correct and you work in Pittsburgh, you will see Pittsburgh local withholdings on your pay statement.

To view your tax elections in Workday, choose "Pay" from the applications menu and then choose "Manage My Tax Elections" in the external links menu. This will open a new tab to the CIC+ EForms Center. There you can confirm that your residential and work address are correct.

CMU employees receive pay on a monthly, semi-monthly or biweekly pay cycle:

  • Salaried faculty or staff members will receive pay on a monthly basis on the last business day of the month.
  • Students who receive a stipend will receive pay on a semi-monthly basis on the 15th and the last business day of each month.
  • Students or staff members who enter hours in Workday will receive pay on a bi-weekly basis every other Friday.
  • Employees who work outside of the Pittsburgh campus have different pay schedules depending on the campus at which they work.

Refer to the Payroll Calendars webpage to find the exact pay dates for your pay cycle. If you have multiple positions, you can contact the HR Service Center to ask about your pay frequency.

Pittsburgh-based employees can pick up paychecks at the HR Service Center during regular business hours starting on the scheduled pay date. A photo ID is required to receive a paycheck. Unclaimed checks older than one month will be mailed to the valid street address printed on the paycheck, which is the primary address in Workday.

Silicon Valley- and Los Angeles-based employees can pick up their checks at their local Human Resources office during regular business hours starting on the scheduled pay date.

Paychecks for remote workers that do not have direct deposit are mailed on the worker’s pay date via USPS.

Employees at CMU’s international campuses in Australia, Qatar and Rwanda are encouraged to speak with their HR Representative to set up direct deposit.

Direct deposit payment elections are managed in Workday, but are only available to those who already have a valid social security number in the system. Visit My HR Toolkit for more information, quick guides, and additional resources on managing payment elections.

If you have not submitted a valid social security number to the HR Service Center, you will be issued a paper paycheck.

Carnegie Mellon University encourages employees to establish direct deposit payment elections. It is the safest and fastest way to receive your pay on pay day. The CMUWorks Service Center only mails paychecks that are older than one month to the employee's valid primary address available in Workday. In the meantime, employees can pick up paychecks at the HR Service Center during regular business hours starting on the scheduled pay date. A photo ID is required to pick up a pay check.

The HR Service Center mails paychecks older than a month to the employee's valid primary address on the paycheck. If your mailing address has changed, please update it as soon as possible in Workday if you are a faculty or staff member or in Student Information Online (SIO) if you are a student.

If a paycheck is not deposited within six months, the check will need reissued. Please contact the HR Service Center to start the process of reissuing the check.
