CMU teammates Linus Hamilton (CMU’16), Michael Druggan (S’15), and Albert Gu (S’15) are among the 4,277 North American undergraduates from 578 institutions competing in the Mathematical Association of America’s 73rd William Lowell Putnam Competition, which is considered the premier undergraduate math competition.

The students have six hours to solve 12 complex mathematical problems using creative thinking and concepts taught in college mathematics courses.

Once the scores are tallied, Hamilton learns he placed in the top 10 individuals. In addition, the CMU team came in fifth, which marks the second consecutive year that CMU has placed among the top five teams. Only 15 other universities have placed in the top five more than once since 1990.
