The William Lowell Putnam Competition is considered the mathematics Super Bowl for North American undergraduate students. This year, 4,440 American and Canadian undergraduates from 572 institutions competed. During the six-hour marathon competition, students attempted to solve 12 complex problems. Three first-year Mellon College of Science students—Michael Druggan, Albert Gu, and Archit Kulkarni—beat all but the team from Harvard. Following CMU were Caltech (3), Stanford (4), and MIT (5). For second place, CMU’s Department of Mathematical Sciences received $20,000, and each team member received $800.
