Students crowd around a lab table to watch their teacher conduct electricity with a few household items. It’s all part of the New York State Board of Regents’ high school curriculum meant to ignite interest in science careers. There are signs it’s working—nearly a third of the 300 national semi-finalists in the recent Intel Science Talent Search were New York students. This strategy was implemented, in part, under the leadership of Milton Cofield, executive director for Undergraduate Business Administration at the Tepper School of Business. The New York Senate recently honored Cofield with a senate proclamation as he ended his 10 years of service, first as regent to the 7th Judicial District of the New York State Board of Education, later as vice chancellor.
