The Antoinette Perry Award for Excellence in Theatre—Tony to her friends—is Broadway’s highest honor. Seven Carnegie Mellon alumni received nominations this year:

  • Josh Gad (A’03), Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical, The Book of Mormon
  • Peter Hylenski (A’97), Best Sound Design of a Musical, The Scottsboro Boys
  • Judith Light (A’70), Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Role in a Play, Lombardi
  • Patina Miller (A’06), Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical, Sister Act
  • Rory O’Malley (A’03), Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Musical, The Book of Mormon
  • Ann Roth (A’53; Hon’00), Best Costume Design of a Musical, The Book of Mormon
  • Mark Wendland (A’84), Best Scenic Design of a Play, The Merchant of Venice

The breadth of these nominations attests to the quality of the College of Fine Arts’ approach, says David Cote, theater editor for Time Out New York magazine. “Obviously,” Cote says, “Carnegie Mellon is doing a good job.”

None of the nominees got to give an acceptance speech. Not to worry, says Cote: “They’re all extremely talented people, professionals; and they’re all at the top of their game.”
