This fall, Carnegie Mellon Qatar’s expansive marble lobby echoes again with the voices of students, staff, and faculty. But there is one new voice in the crowd: Ilker Baybars, the new dean leading the campus in Doha’s Education City. Baybars (TPR’72,HNZ’79), a native of Turkey, has been an award-winning Carnegie Mellon faculty member for 33 years; his primary teaching and research have been in the fields of quantitative methods, operations research, and production management. “He has been actively engaged with the campus in Qatar since its inception in 2004, and his insight into the students, faculty, and business needs within the region uniquely underscore the ideal fit associated with this appointment,” says Provost Mark Kamlet.
