The university's soccer teams have a new home, but it's not far from their old one. The intramural field adjacent to Gesling Stadium has been transformed into a state-of-the-art FieldTurf soccer pitch, which is where the Tartans now compete. The field has portable bleachers, and the back of the stadium scoreboard has been enhanced to cover game action.

The new surface also welcomes club teams, intramurals, and anyone looking to play catch with a Frisbee. "We estimate that the new field will positively impact more than 80 percent of the Carnegie Mellon student body," says Susan Bassett, director of athletics.

The synthetic turf field is expected to eliminate 100 hours of mowing per year, minimizing gasoline usage and emissions. It will also negate the 500 pounds of grass seed, 5 tons of topsoil, and 2,400 pounds of fertilizer needed each year.
