It's easy to boast that a university is full of good ideas, but for CMU professor José M. F. Moura, the proof is in the patent. Holder of 12 U.S. patents, he takes ideas from his research with electrical and computer engineering students and puts them into real-world use—with products ranging from biomedical technology to a sequence detector used in 60% of computers sold worldwide. For inventions that “have made a tangible impact on quality of life, economic development, and the welfare of society,” Moura was named a National Academy of Inventors Fellow, joining a group from “more than 150 prestigious universities and governmental and non-profit research institutions.”
