NF 9 V11n3it’s opening in 1996, the University Center has been the hub of the Pittsburgh campus, housing a bit of everything: student organization offices, an Olympic-size swimming pool, post office, restaurants, meeting rooms, and more. Soon, ground will be broken for a 50,000-square-foot expansion for additional recreation and education venues. Something else is changing, too. As a tribute to Jared L. Cohon, CMU’s Board of Trustees passed a resolution to name the UC in honor of the President Emeritus. At the naming ceremony, James Rohr, the board’s vice chair, perhaps said it best, pointing out that the UC is “the source of life here” so it was a “no brainer” to name it the Jared L. Cohon University Center, after someone who “had an impact on every aspect of campus life during his 16-year presidency.”
