The theme for the American Association for the Advancement of Science's annual meeting was a no-brainer this year: 2009 marks the 200th anniversary of Charles Darwin's birth and the 150th of his publication, On the Origin of Species. For four Carnegie Mellon professors, though, 2009 marks a first for them--the first year they can call themselves AAAS fellows. Receiving the honor from the world's largest general scientific society were Tom Mitchell, School of Computer Science; Eswaran Subrahmanian, Carnegie Institute of Technology; and Michael Widom and John L. Woolford, both from the Mellon College of Science.
