Most pedestrians walking along the Carnegie Mellon campus on Forbes Avenue would guess there's not much space to spare on this bustling urban campus, situated just steps from the Carnegie Museums of Art and Natural History and a few blocks from the University of Pittsburgh. But, thanks to recent land purchases, Carnegie Mellon will have three-plus acres to develop on both sides of Forbes Avenue near the Craig Street intersection. Although the planning process for the new land is just under way, President Jared Cohon envisions a potential multi-use development, such as the acclaimed Collaborative Innovation Center, which was built in 2005 and has enabled partnerships with the likes of Apple, Google, Intel, and Microsoft. "This is an investment in our future," Cohon says of the approximate $32.5 million combined transactions. "This land is of such compelling importance to the university that we have decided to move forward with the purchase, even in this challenging economic climate."
