What would you pay for Audacity—downloadable software for audio editing and recording—which can record live audio, convert tapes and records into digital recordings or CDs, and mix sounds together? It's hard to argue with the pricing chosen by Audacity's designers, Dominic Mazzoni (CS'03) and Roger Dannenberg, a Carnegie Mellon associate professor. The software is free. It must work well, too, because PC World magazine named it one of 2008's 100 best products. It has been downloaded by more than 1 million users.
