It's now possible to identify defects during major construction projects before it is too late. To identify possible quality issues, Burcu Akinci, a Carnegie Mellon associate professor of civil and environmental engineering, and her research team work on integrating 3D imaging technologies and building information models. Akinci's efforts won her the 2008 Celebration and Technology Innovation Award from the FIATEC industry consortium for significant achievements in new and emerging technology research.
