Facing 15 teams from Cornell, Michigan, and other top universities, Carnegie Mellon teammates Arjuna Hayes (E'12), Ethan Gladding (A'12), Amos Yuen (CS'12), and Chong Xie (CS'12) had 24 hours to develop a computer application useful to business professionals. They were competing in the Yahoo! Open Hack All-Stars Event. The CMU team created a file-sharing tool named Ruum (a play on the word "room"), which facilitates group projects through fast document publishing and sharing. The judges named Ruum the winner, awarding its creators $10,000.
