Carnegie Mellon researchers Alessandro Acquisti and Ralph Gross studied users of the social networking Web site Facebook. Unlike other social networks, Facebook uses real names and photos, which increases privacy concerns. The study revealed that some network users assumed that personal information was shared only in their specific networks, and few took advantage of the site’s privacy controls. Facebook has more than 14 million registered users divided among 40,000 regional, work, college, and high school networks.
