What's in Our Lab
Dual-channel OxiplexTS
The OxiplexTS (ISS) device is a noninvasive near infrared spectroscopy system which measures the absolute determination of oxy- and deoxy-hemoglobin concentration, oxygen saturation and total hemoglobin content in various tissues. We will use this device in the majority of our research projects to analyze hemodynamics of the brain.
NIBP100E - Noninvasive Blood Pressure Monitoring System
With the NIBP100E (Biopac®) device we will continuously monitor beat-to-beat blood pressure. This device uses both a double-finger sensor as well as an upper arm cuff to provide accurate measurements. We will use this device to ensure that participants are within a healthy range of blood pressure throughout observation and to analyze the correlations between mean arterial pressure and blood oxygenation levels.

BrainAmp MR 32 Channel EEG System
EEG systems provide high temporal specificity for the electrical activity in the brain. We will use this device in combination with MRI to obtain both high temporal and spatial specificity of the neural activity.
Advanced Thermosensory Stimulator – TSA2 from Medoc
This device allows us to safely induce pain both inside and outside of the MRI. We will use this device to compare the pain experience of patients with sickle cell disease to healthy controls.
Artinis PortaLite MKII
Device is used to measure local hemoglobin levels and tissue saturation index (TSI). This device will be used both on the frontal brain and on muscle tissue.

Biopac Pulse Oximeter
Pulse oximeters are used to detect and record peripheral oxygen in functional hemoglobin (SpO2) as well as the participants heart rate in beats per minute (BPM).

DSM III - Skin Colormeter
The DSM III relies on LEDs to determine skin pigmentation properties. This device is used in our lab to obtain a qualitative metric of melanin content. This metric allows us to analyze the bias in various instruments.
3T MRI - Siemens
We utilize the CMU-Pitt Brain Imaging Data Generation & Education (BRIDGE) center MRI. You can learn more about this device and center here
