Athletics To Host Faculty and Staff Family Day Sunday, Feb. 19

The Department of Athletics invites all faculty, staff and their families to Faculty and Staff Family Day on Sunday, Feb. 19 during the men's and women's basketball games against the University of Rochester. The men's game starts at noon with the women's tip set for 2 p.m. in Skibo Gymnasium. All children in attendance will receive a free mini basketball and have the chance to play on the court during each halftime. Come out for a fantastic afternoon of basketball!

Students Could Win $20,000 for Innovative Sustainable Idea

Students with a great sustainable idea could win up to $20,000 by winning The Odebrecht Award for Sustainable Development. The award program is accepting entries from students in engineering fields, architecture, building and construction management, and chemistry. Whether related to efficient uses of sustainable materials, new chemical processes or new building techniques, projects should explore innovative practices, methods and ideas that can be implemented in a variety of real-world ventures. Entries will be judged on content, technical contribution, applicability, clarity/presentation and reasoning/depth. Entries are due May 31. Buggy Freeroll Practice Schedule Available

Weekend buggy freeroll practices begin Saturday, Feb. 11 and continue through Sunday, April 15. Weather permitting, practices will take place from 6 to 8:50 a.m. on Saturdays and from 6 to 9 a.m. on Sundays. Tech Street, Frew Street and Schenley Drive will be closed to vehicular traffic from 5 to 9 a.m. on the following dates: Feb. 11, 12, 18, 19, 25; March 3, 4, 17, 18, 24, 25, 31; and April  1, 7, 8, 14, 15.

Nominations Sought for Student Employee of the Year Award

Nominations are now being accepted for the Student Employee of the Year (SEOTY) Award, sponsored by the Northeast Association of Student Employment Administrators (NEASEA) and the National Student Employment Association (NSEA). This is the 13th year that Carnegie Mellon is participating in the program, which recognizes the outstanding contributions of college students who work while attending college.  All student employees, undergraduate and graduate, are eligible. The application deadline is Feb. 20.

Environmental Health & Safety has announced three additional AED/CPR training classes:

  • Feb. 16, 10 a.m. – noon, Wean Hall 5310                  
  • March 2, 10 a.m. – noon, Rangos 2, University Center                      
  • March 21, 1 – 3 p.m., Rangos 2, University Center

ETC Press Releases Well Played, Vol. 2

ETC Press has released the second issue of "Well Played: a journal on video games, value and meaning," which includes "BioShock and Portal: A Discussion of Poetics" by Yotam Haimsberg, "We should be heroes... A case study of community building as a dominant strategy" by Simon Egenfeldt-Nielsen, "Cracking the Code: Untangling Game Structure, Properties and Player Experience" by Elizabeth Goins and "A Life in Baseball, Digital and Otherwise" by Abraham Stein. The Well Played Journal is a forum for in-depth close readings of video games that parse out the various meanings to be found in the experience of playing a game. Nominations Open for Graduate Student Awards

The Graduate Student Service and Teaching Award nominations are now open and will be due on Friday, Feb. 10. The committees would greatly appreciate your support in soliciting and submitting nominations of graduate students who have excelled in teaching or service so that their efforts can be recognized by the university community. Nomination information can be found at http://www.cmu.edu/celebration-of-education/graduate-student/index.html. Awards will be presented on Thursday, April 5, at the "Innovation with Impact: Graduate Student Celebration of Research, Teaching and Service" during Graduate Student Appreciation Week. Recipients will also be recognized at the Celebration of Education on Wednesday, April 25.
