Accident Investigation and Reporting

Teaches supervisors how to conduct an accident investigation, what to look for, how to analyze, who to interview, the purpose of an investigation, who should conduct the investigation, filling out the accident report, what happens to the accident reports once filed, what the reports are used for, common errors in making the investigation, and how to develop recommendations. AED Training

Recommended: for any faculty, staff, or student. Floor Marshals are especially encouraged to attend this training.
Attendees will learn how to recognize the signs of a sudden cardiac arrest, when to activate the EMS system, and how to do CPR. Hands-on training will enable those who attend this class to become familiar with an AED and to successfully operate it in an emergency. Aerial Lift Truck Safety

Asbestos Awareness

Biological Safety

Recommended: for all persons working biological agents and/or animals, either in a classroom or laboratory setting.
The training addresses the recommendations specified in the Biological Safety in Microbiological and Biomedical Laboratories (4th edition) published by the Centers for Disease Control and the requirements of Carnegie Mellon's Biological Safety Program. Blood Borne Pathogens

Recommended: Persons with reasonably anticipated skin, eye, mucous membrane, or parenteral contact with:
- Human blood · human blood components · products made from human blood.
- The following human body fluids: semen, vaginal secretions, cerebrospinal fluid, synovial fluid, pleural fluid, pericardial fluid, peritoneal fluid, amniotic fluid, saliva in dental procedures, any body fluid that is visibly contaminated with blood, and all body fluids in situations where it is difficult or impossible to differentiate between body fluids.

Compressed Gas and Toxic Gas Procedures

All users should view the first section, as indicated, as it deals with issues common to all users. Defensive Driving

Required: University policy requires that anyone whose job requires them to drive a vehicle on behalf of the university take the National Safety Council Defensive Driving class once every three years. The class is recommended for those who aren't required to drive as part of their job but who may drive on occasion, including rental vehicles. The course is classroom instruction only and includes a verification of the individual's driving record.
The course is sponsored by the National Safety Council and includes such common driving problems as making pre-trip inspections, driving in adverse conditions, differences between cars and vans, stopping distances, dealing with other drivers, city driving, highway driving, rural driving, safety belts, pedestrians, and collision reporting procedures.

DOT Security

The attacks of September 11, 2001 produced some new Department of Transportation requirements addressing hazardous materials that are shipped. University Police, employees of Mellon Stores and the staff of EH&S all have activity in the University's plan to provide security for hazardous materials shipments and are required to be trained in the elements of the program. DOT Shipping

Recommended: for all employees involved in the packing, shipping, receipt and transportation of hazardous materials.
All employees involved in the packing, shipping, receipt and transportation of hazardous materials will need to receive training in the proper performance of these functions. The class is obtained externally and attendance is coordinated through EH&S. In addition to the initial training class, there is a refresher requirement (also an external class) every three years. Electron Microscope Safety Training

Emergency Responders Training

Discusses why we need a plan, what should be included, and how it is implemented. Specific protocols and responses are presented as they apply to Carnegie Mellon, as is the National Incident Management System, the command structure that the university will follow . Fire Extinguisher Use

Fire Prevention Safety

Discusses the various types of fires and the means of preventing them. Escape routes and techniques are reviewed, as well as a description of the various alarm systems found on campus. Click here to register
Forklift Safety

Approximate time: 1 hour plus hands-on demonstration of ability to operate a forklift.
Required: A recent OSHA standard was issued requiring all operators of forklifts to attend training, and demonstrate their ability to operate a forklift, before they are permitted to actually use a forklift. If you are currently operating a forklift and have not had this training, you are doing so illegally.
The training addresses forklift stability, steering, lifting, moving a load, placing a load, stacking and un stacking, inspection, hazardous locations and environments, ramps and docks, training frequency, and general safety rules for forklift operation. Following the classroom portion of the training, attendees will be required to operate a forklift, to demonstrate their proficiency. Click here to register

Laboratory Ergonomics

Many activities in the laboratory can exert stress and strain on muscles and joints, ultimately causing significant injuries. The training addresses the details of the OSHA Laboratory Standard and of Carnegie Mellon's Chemical Hygiene Plan. Discussed are techniques to use hazardous materials so that hazards to workers are minimized. Details are provided for using Material Safety Data Sheets, personal protective equipment and ventilation devices. This training class also covers the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act, EPA regulations and Carnegie Mellon's policies on hazardous waste. Laser Safety

Laser safety training is a requirement of all persons using a laser or laser containing equipment rated as a Class IIIb or Class IV. Lead Awareness

Recommended: Facility coordinators (who coordinate renovation or construction activities), CDFC project managers and FMS managers.
Lead containing materials are present in many different building materials, most notably in lead paint. Construction, maintenance and renovation activities may disturb these items and produce not only a health hazard for persons in the area but also an environmental hazard resulting from debris or other waste from the activity. To ensure that all lead containing building materials are properly addressed in the stated activities, Lead Awareness training is required of Facility coordinators (who coordinate renovation or construction activities), CDFC project managers and FMS managers. Machine Guarding

Explains why machines need guarding and how to go about providing those guards. The student will learn what hazards to look for, how to protect against them, types of guarding, the importance of not bypassing guards, and why some guards may look adequate but still not provide complete protection. Discusses the five major risk factors for ergonomic injuries, as well as the symptoms of ergonomic injuries and how to avoid them. Attendees will learn how to set up their work space and will receive guidance on how to recognize bad ergonomic work habits and how to correct them. Radionuclide (RAM) New User Training

Recommended: Radionuclide (RAM) New User training is the first step to using either unsealed RAM or sealed sources (or both).

Respiratory Protection

Recommended: annually for all persons using a respirator or face-filtering piece (dust mask).
This class provides instruction in the proper use of respiratory protection. The training includes determining stability and the selection of the respirator, the fitting and maintenance procedures, and the details of the Carnegie Mellon Respiratory Protection Program, including the medical monitoring requirements. All employees who have been supplied with a respirator must receive this training annually. Fit tests for individuals with their respirators will be performed separately, by appointment. Wherever we go, we are subject to severe weather in the form of lightning, flash flooding, tornadoes, snowstorms, or hail. All of these can affect our personal safety. EH&S is offering a class which will enable you to recognize the danger signs and prepare for severe weather before it hits. This class is a must for anyone who spends any amount of time outside, such as those who participate in or coach outdoor sports, hikers, campers, or even those who simply wish to enjoy a picnic or walk in the park. Slip, Trip and Fall Protection

Hazards found around the office are discussed, with suggestions on how to avoid them. An emphasis is placed on falls, which are the leading cause of injuries on campus. A humorous video is used to focus on a serious problem. Attention is given to those office objects that we take for granted, but which can create special safety problems, such as file cabinets, swivel chairs, hallways, carpets, extension cords, paper cutters, and many everyday situations that we all face. SPCC/Oil Management

Recommended: All persons who handle, control, use, dispose of or otherwise manage oil above 55 gallons.
Under Clean Water Act regulations, strict rules apply to all use and storage of oil in quantities greater than 55 gallons. Persons who handle, control, use, dispose of or otherwise manage oil above this level must attend SPPC training, to ensure that you are aware of your duties under the regulation.
