The late Carnegie Mellon University English Professor Erwin R. Steinberg was one of the great pioneers of plain language and technical writing in the 20th century. From his earliest teaching and consulting to his long tenure at CMU, he advocated, encouraged, and taught clarity and a user focus in everything his students and his clients wrote. To honor Steinberg, the English Department will host a memorial lecture on Tuesday, April 16 at 4:30 p.m. in Baker Hall's Steinberg Auditorium (A53).

Each year the college selects one of its graduate students for the Dietrich College Graduate Student Teaching Award to recognize excellence, dedication, and innovation in teaching. We are pleased to announce that English Department Ph.D. candidate Doug Cloud, and Modern Languages Ph.D. candidate Ryan Miller, have been selected as 2013 co-winners of the Dietrich College Graduate Student Teaching Award.Michael Witmore To Deliver Keynote Address for The Celebration of the Humanities
To celebrate CMU's excellence in the humanities, the Dietrich College and the Center for the Arts in Society will host a program and reception featuring A keynote address by Michael Witmore, director of the Folger Shakespeare Library, on "What is Access: Perspectives on the Archive." The program and reception will take place on Friday, February 15 at 4:30 pm in the Giant Eagle Auditorium.
