Summer @ CMU Newsletter: Issue I
Welcome to Issue I of the Summer Studies newsletter series! Every few weeks we will be sending out a new list of fun and exciting things happening around Pittsburgh so that you can make the most of your summer at CMU.
Getting involved on campus is an essential part of the CMU experience, and we believe that getting off campus and exploring Pittsburgh is just as important. We want to share what we find about this rapidly changing city and the exciting things that are happening this summer. We'll conclude each newsletter with a Neighborhood Spotlight, a rundown of the best things to do in two neighborhoods you may not have explored yet.
We're excited to embark on new summer adventures with you!

Neighborhood Spotlight
Oakland and Cultural District Downtown
Oakland
Oakland is best known for being home to the Universty of Pittsburgh and parts of our own Carnegie Mellon campus. Many local businesses cater to students and therefore provide a diversse selection of foods and activities that will appeal to a wide spectrum of people. Oakland's walking-distance locale is an additional plus, as you can take a nice stroll through the luck Schenley Park or through Carnegie Mellon's picturesque campus on your way to these two neighborhood establishments we are highlighting.

Paired perfectly with the Tropical Forest Cuba Festival is a dinner at the Union Grill on 413 S. Craig Street. Unlike the former, the Union Grill offers deeply local Pittsburgh foods you'll love. The restaurant provides outdoor seating that opens to Craig Street itself, which gives it a charming Parisian vibe. As for the foodm you'll definitely feel a twinge of remorse seeing the amazing dishes on other patrons' tables. But why not begin with a local specialty as a starter? Their Turkey Devonshire is a favorite comfort food that exude Pittsburgh from all over. A taste of their delicious matzo ball soup will also remind you of Pittsburgh's rich Jewish culinary influence.
Cultural District Downtown
Located in downtown Pittsburgh, the Cultural District is a beautiful fourteen-square block area filled with parks, plazas, and art. The cultural district features six different theaters which offer over 1,500 shows annually. This district also offers various art galleries, restaurants, annual festivals, and retail stores.
Set right on 6th Street, Täkō is a Mexican grill restaurant with a twist! Bringing a “SoCal surf vibe,” Täkō is a unique restaurant that combines traditional Mexican dishes with non-traditional ingredients. Ever had a Korean taco or a cabbage pancake? Now you can! And for those of us that aren’t quite as adventurous, they do have chicken and steak tacos as well as chips and salsa, and churros for dessert!
In June of 1960, The Women's Committee of the Carnegie Institute conceived an idea to move art beyond the walls of art museums and onto the streets of downtown Pittsburgh. By 1964, the 5th annual festival grew from four days to ten days of art and music! Embarking on their 60th successful year, the Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival is a 10-day celebration of the arts in downtown Pittsburgh's famed three rivers or Point State Park. This festival is free to attend and attacts nearly 500,000 visitors annually. The Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival begins on the first Friday in June this year taking place Friday, June 16, 2019.
This year's featured lineup includes:
- Friday, June 7: India.Arie

- Sunday, June 9: Nahko and Medicine For The People & The Teskey Brother
