Carnegie Mellon University

(Sent Feb 22, 2021)

Dear Grad Students with Children and Families,

Applications are now open for the… (drumroll please)

GSA Childcare Grant Program!

The GSA Child Care Grant is a need-based child care support in the amount of $500 per semester to eligible graduate student applicants in the form of non-qualified scholarships.

While these grants do not cover the bulk of child care expenses, they do provide graduate student parents with some financial support to help off-set childcare expenses and to enable graduate student parents to pursue their studies. Check out our website for more information regarding eligibility and the application process!

Priority applications for the Spring 2021 semester are currently open and close Monday, March 8th. The form for applying can be found here.

Furthermore, we wanted to remind everyone of the additional childcare options created last semester through the university. Please take advantage of any of these opportunities that are helpful to you.

  • Partial Day Childcare: available at the Cyert Center Penn Ave. location (near Bakery Square) for children ages 2-5 years old. The cost is $5 per hour, and there are minimum and maximum numbers of hours that can be used by each family per week.

  • Full Day Proctoring: available on campus between 7:30 am and 3pm for school-age children (6-12 years old). This program is intended for children in online school programs and costs $5 per hour.

  • Concierge Service: available free of charge to help you find other forms of care that you may need such as tutoring, childcare pods, sick-child care, elder care, and pet care. To receive assistance, simply contact the specialists at hrfamilycare@andrew.cmu.edu with your questions or needs.

  • CareLink: CareLink is a place where the CMU community can post and look for jobs in Pittsburgh. It may be helpful for people looking for childcare or tutoring options!

For more information about these programs and how to use them, please visit the Family Care for COVID-19 website.

GSA is honored to help partner with and provide these resources to graduate students with families. If you haven’t already, sign up for our email list to stay informed on family- and partner-related news. We are also in the process of organizing a new online community for meeting other CMU families. If you have not done so already, please share your thoughts with us about which platform you’d prefer for such a community by filling out this 3-5 minute survey. This could be helpful for forming COVID pods with other families, so stay tuned for future communications on this! The GSA has also collected resources from around the university in one convenient location. If you have any questions, please reach out to us or GSA@cmu.edu.

Kind regards,

McKenna McCall and Regan Kubicek
