Lauren Janicke, a Carnegie Mellon alumna who studied Civil Engineering with an additional major in Statistics and minor in Environmental and Sustainability Studies (ESS), believes that the minor in ESS helped her better understand the systematic issues behind environmental and sustainability problems. This perspective helped Janicke in her research with Dr. Destenie Nock regarding air pollution emissions from transmission and distribution systems. The interdisciplinary nature of the ESS program also helped Janicke learn about the importance of effective scientific communication for environmental problems. She used this knowledge in her classes and research to help others make more informed decisions. Following graduation, Janicke plans to attend London School of Economics to get her Master's in Statistics and return to Carnegie Mellon University to get her PhD in Civil Engineering to investigate energy equity problems.
