Dr. Herman Herman to lead NREC

NREC has a new director: Dr. Herman Herman. He succeeds Dr. Anthony “Tony” Stentz, who is stepping down as director. Dr. Herman brings more than 20 years of robotic system design, integration, and program management expertise to the job. His work as a principal commercialization specialist has put him at the forefront of NREC’s efforts to develop and transfer robotic technologies to commercial partners.

"We are delighted that Herman Herman will be leading NREC," said Martial Hebert, director of the Robotics Institute in the School of Computer Science. "He deeply understands NREC's culture of hard work and creativity, which bring these technologies from sketches on a white board to fully realized, deliverable prototypes."

Dr. Stentz will continue leading work on the CHIMP robot (which is competing in the DARPA Robotics Challenge Finals) and other projects during a transition period at NREC. Afterwards, he plans to take a leave of absence from Carnegie Mellon University to pursue new technical opportunities.
