G2U Network Conversation Spotlights Pittsburgh

Built on the idea that government performance depends on the education and training of talented public servants, the Government-to-University Initiative (G2U) strives to build sustainable regional connections between government and universities to respond to the government's high-need areas at the local, municipal, state, and federal levels. The G2U Initiative is supported and funded by the Volcker Alliance, a nonprofit dedicated to empowering the public sector workforce through collaborations with government, universities, and the civic sector across the country

On September 1, 2021 representatives from Carnegie Mellon University and the Local Government Academy represented Pittsburgh at the Volcker Alliance G2U Network Conversation. The Network Conversation presents an opportunity for G2U partners to share and receive access to information, ideas, and best practices from across the six regional network sites through a G2U Resource Exchange.

Continuing with the mission of exchanging information, resources and opportunities from the G2U Network are highlighted here!

Pittsburgh

In Pittsburgh, our team has launched a public service messaging campaign on Instagram. Instagram’s popularity among young people helps G2U Pittsburgh (PGH) to connect directly with students and recent graduates contemplating their next professional steps. G2U PGH’s Instagram account exposes young people to public service careers in interactive and creative ways.

  • Spotlighting Public Service Stories from the Pittsburgh Community
  • Promoting Regional Resources and Events
  • Bringing Content to Life with Memes and #MotivationMonday
  • Showcasing what Degrees are utilized in Careers in Public Service

Our @G2U_PGH account has quickly taken off, reaching over 500 new accountholders, generating more than 3,000 impressions, and gaining over 100 followers since its debut in February 2021. Follow us on Instagram to keep up with our coming expansion to LinkedIn, Twitter, and YouTube.

In the 2020-2021 academic year, G2U in Pittsburgh organized a three-part webinar series for government hiring managers and university career service leaders to foster connections and share actionable information to guide students on the job and internship search. The University of Pittsburgh also organized the virtual G2U PGH Government Career + Internship Fair.

Chicago

In Chicago, members from the University of Wisconsin- Madison invite other university partners to participate in the National Survey of College Internships (NSCI), which aims to develop a national dataset to help campuses establish baselines about internship participation and quality, engage in continuous improvement of these programs, and identify gaps in services for students.

Georgia

The G2U initiative in Georgia is led by the Georgia Municipal Association (GMA) and Georgia City Solutions (GCS). Their multi-year effort, “Jobs with Purpose: Municipal Workforce Development Initiative,” brings together municipal and university leaders to collaboratively assess the workforce needs of Georgia’s cities and develop plans to address them. Having launched in June of 2021, Georgia is the sixth and newest member of the G2U Initiative.

Kansas City

The Kansas City Regional Coalition was the pilot G2U network, launched in 2019. In April, Kansas City’s G2U team released Talent-to-Industry Exchange,  a labor analysis report that examines the current state and talent needs of the public sector in greater Kansas City. The Kansas City team is also supporting the creation of Data Academy for public sector employees to develop the tools and skills to use data to inform decisions.
