RESEARCH SUPPORT

MCS Technology Services is dedicated to providing you with the critical support necessary to improve and maintain your research.

  • Cluster/server design - Help with designing, configuring, and building your own scientific cluster, GPU infrastructure, or any type of server (both for grant proposal writing and for money saving builds).
  • Software support - Linux desktop/laptop/server installs and long term maintenance, including custom configuration tuned specifically for a task or service (webserver, wiki, repositories, cloud, mail, backup, etc).
  • Server Hosting - Supported servers can be hosted on-site in Wean Hall, Mellon Institute, or the PSC Datacenter in Monroeville. (currently all new HPC's will be hosted at the PSC Datacenter)
  • Offsite Server Backups (coming in 2022-2023) - Server data will be kept safe by storing it in an offsite location with regular rotating backups.
  • Data Transfer Node (DTN) to PSC - move large datasets to the PSC through our dedicated DTN and fiber link to the PSC filesystem.
  • Physics and Math HPC clusters - local clusters available to all Math and Physics personnel.
  • New Laboratory Setup - Setting up a new lab? Consult with us on your required computing/networking/server equipment to get the best deal possible.
  • Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center (PSC) - Bridges-2 provides transformative capability for rapidly evolving, computation-intensive and data-intensive research, creating opportunities for collaboration and convergence research. It supports both traditional and non-traditional research communities and applications. Bridges-2 is integrating new technologies for converged, scalable HPC, machine learning and data; prioritizing researcher productivity and ease of use; and providing an extensible architecture for interoperation with complementary data-intensive projects, campus resources, and clouds.

Bridges-2 is available at no cost for research and education, and at cost-recovery rates for other purposes.

  • Anton2 (Biomolecular simulation) - Anton 2, the next-generation Anton supercomputer, is a 128 node system, made available without cost by DESRES for non-commercial research use by US universities and other not-for-profit institutions, and is hosted by PSC with support from the NIH National Institute of General Medical Sciences.  I
  • Neocortex (AI Development) Neocortex democratizes access to game-changing compute power otherwise only available to tech giants for students, postdocs, faculty, and others, who require faster turnaround on training to analyze data and integrate AI with simulation. It also inspires the research community to scale their AI-based research and integrate AI advances into their research workflows.
