Mission
The Leonard Gelfand Center for Service Learning & Outreach is dedicated to creating and supporting initiatives that enable Carnegie Mellon faculty, students, and staff to share their expertise and passion to improve educational outcomes for K-12 students. We focus on building long-term partnerships with community organizations to develop new STEM education programs, providing both direct programming and professional development for educators to enhance STEM learning. Our commitment extends to ensuring access to high-quality educational opportunities for underserved populations. By serving as a bridge between Carnegie Mellon and the broader community, we offer faculty, students, and staff unique opportunities to positively impact the lives of children and adults. Additionally, we support the personal and professional growth of Carnegie Mellon students through active engagement in outreach programs. The Gelfand Outreach initiative is central to our efforts, coordinating STEM-focused workshops for K-12 students and assisting faculty with Broader Impacts strategy development for National Science Foundation proposals. We also provide tutoring services to students from Pittsburgh Public Schools and design engaging STEM demonstrations, hands-on activities, and educational field trips for local schools, prioritizing at-risk youth.
