Derek Sommer

Director, Business Applications Development and Support

Bio

Derek joined Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) in 2002 and currently serves as the director for Business Applications Development and Support. In this role, he is responsible for the configuration, maintenance, development, testing and support of CMU’s business systems and software within the Finance Division. This includes Oracle EBS, the Financial Data Warehouse, Excel4apps and the Online Forms System.

Prior to his current role, Derek served as the assistant director for Financial Systems managing the Grants Accounting module in Oracle EBC. He was also the post-award manager and a senior sponsored project accountant for Sponsored Projects Accounting.

Prior to joining the university, Derek served as a senior consultant for KPMG Consulting and BearingPoint, Inc. in pre and post-award accounting operations, client management and Oracle EBS Grants configuration and testing for large higher-education clients.

Education

Derek holds a bachelor’s degree in Finance from Clarion University (2000) with a minor in Information Systems. He also completed the CMU Lead program.
