Bio

Angela Blanton was appointed Carnegie Mellon University’s vice president for Finance and chief financial officer (CFO) in 2017, following her service as interim vice president and CFO in 2016. As CFO, she serves as a key transformational partner to university leadership, providing vision and direction for Carnegie Mellon’s financial priorities and stewardship of its capital resources.

Blanton oversees the university’s financial enterprise, providing direct leadership for key Finance Division units—including Budget and Financial Planning, the Controller’s Office, the Treasurer’s Office, University Audit Services, Procurement and Payments, Business Applications Development and Support, and Finance Training and Communications—while also offering strategic oversight for financial partners across the university’s academic and administrative units. This ensures the effective management of essential functions such as payroll, financial reporting, accounts receivable, procure-to-pay, sponsored projects accounting, international operations, and financial systems, which collectively support CMU’s financial stability and long-term success.

Under her leadership, the Finance Division is a forward-looking, data-driven partner that informs decision-making at the highest levels. Blanton plays a pivotal role in aligning financial resources with the university’s strategic priorities, balancing fiscal discipline with investment in innovation – supporting Carnegie Mellon’s agility, resilience and continued global impact on society through groundbreaking work in education, research, creativity, and entrepreneurship.

Blanton is a seasoned finance executive with over two decades of experience spanning higher education, financial services and manufacturing. Prior to joining CMU, she served as CFO for PNC Investments. Outside the university, she contributes her expertise through significant corporate and nonprofit board service, including roles as a director of the global asset management firm GCM Grosvenor, incoming board chair of Code for America, past chair of Pittsburgh Public Theater, and board member of the Strickland Global Leadership Institute. She also shapes broader national conversations in the finance profession through her service on the Allegheny Conference on Community Development’s Thought Leadership Committee and as a member of the CNBC CFO Council.

 

Education

Blanton received a B.S. in electrical engineering from the University of Michigan and an MBA from Carnegie Mellon University’s Tepper School of Business.
