Leonard Gelfand Center for Service Learning and Outreach

Since 2006 the Leonard Gelfand Center has supported faculty, students and staff through on-campus and community-based activities that improve educational opportunities for youth, especially in the areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics education.  The Leonard Gelfand Center for Service Learning and Outreach was endowed by alumnus Mark Gelfand (S73) to create and strengthen partnerships with local schools and education providers.

Our services are wide-ranging.  The Leonard Gelfand Center:

  • conducts professional development activities for teachers and educational workshops for children.
  • hires students to tutor to serve in the Pittsburgh Public Schools or in programs offered by community organizations.
  • assists with the planning and implementation of activities to satisfy the Broader Impacts criteria of the National Science Foundation.
  • coordinates the annual Mark Gelfand Service Award for Educational Outreach and the Gelfand Center Student Service awards which recognize significant contributions made to improve the educational outcomes of children in the community.
