In April 2026, the House of European History in Brussels opened Postcolonial?, a major temporary exhibition examining how Europe’s colonial past continues to shape the present. Moving from the structural foundations of European colonialism to decolonization and its unfinished legacies, the exhibition brings together historical objects, contemporary art, and personal narratives. The museum describes Postcolonial? as more than a temporary exhibition: it is intended to inform a broader reconsideration of how colonial history is represented across its permanent displays.

Two members of CBESA played a role in the exhibition’s development. CBESA Director Mame-Fatou Niang and Senior Research Fellow Michael McEachrane were among the eight scholars and activists invited to serve as the exhibition’s “Critical Friends,” an external group established to challenge, review, and advise the curatorial team throughout the project. McEachrane also contributed to the accompanying exhibition catalogue, extending CBESA’s involvement from the curatorial process into the publication documenting and contextualizing the exhibition.
