About Us
In the Department of English, we’re proud to cultivate the next generation of readers and leaders. The reason our graduates have become doctors, authors, venture capitalists, lawyers, and CEOs is because English at Carnegie Mellon ultimately offers equipment for living—the tools for clear and persuasive communication, for deep and patient thinking, for engaged citizenship, and for a fully realized personal and professional life. We consider humanity's biggest questions through the lenses of film, literature, and rhetoric, and we believe that writing—process and product—is a deep well of wisdom. Far from opposing tech culture, we consider the reflective vision we offer as one of its most desirable components. As Head of English, I'm extraordinarily proud of the work we do and aim to ensure that English continues to be not only a place where technology meets tradition but also where readers find refuge and leaders find language. Please don't hesitate to get in touch to find out more about English at CMU.
