C@CM Information Literacy module

What is it and how does it work?

Computing@Carnegie Mellon (C@CM) is an Open Learning Initiative (OLI) course that provides an introduction to information literacy skills and safe, responsible and effective computing, focusing on the tools and technologies that are specific to Carnegie Mellon.

Which skill(s) are targeted?

  • Identify, define, and navigate the data and information landscape
  • Critically evaluate data and information
  • Analyze data  and engage with information in and across communities of practice
  • Manage the data and information ecosystem consistent with laws, policies, and ethical practices

Who else has used it?

  • C@CM is a graduation requirement for all undergraduate students at CMU.

The educator time commitment for incorporating the C@CM OLI course is under an hour overall. This includes requesting access to the online course, adding a few instructions to your syllabus/assignments, and, if applicable, incorporating completion data into students' final grade.

NOTE: C@CM is a graduation requirement for all CMU undergraduates. The majority of students complete it during the summer prior to their first fall semester of enrollment. Students who do not complete it in this time period are required to complete it once they arrive on campus. Educators may assign/invite students to refresh what they learned from C@CM by (re)assigning one or more of its modules.

There are a total of 5 modules in the C@CM OLI course and each module takes students about 20 to 30 minutes to complete. NOTE: If used in a course context, this time should be factored into students' coursework time.

Educator how-to steps

  1. Email eberly-assist@andrew.cmu.edu to request that the C@CM OLI course for graduate students be added to your Canvas site (or be set up separately if you are not using Canvas). Please include the following information in your request: Course number/name or Canvas site name and any other questions you have about using this resource.
  2. NOTE: You may request that a subset of the course’s modules be included in your customized version, if that best suits your context (e.g., just the modules related to evaluating and citing sources). If you would like to review the full course outline and preview the modules before deciding, feel free to request this when you email eberly-assist.
  3. Decide when students should complete the C@CM module(s) and then include this in the corresponding assignments/instructions to students.
