Information & Data Literacy

Why does this add value for students?

image of students in libraryInformation and data literacy skills are not only essential for students while they are enrolled at CMU but also for their future roles as professionals in knowledge-rich fields, informed citizens, and lifelong learners. Information literacy is critical to success in these contexts, providing the skills needed to discover, evaluate, and use responsibly an array of information. While much material is text based, increasingly quantitative data are available for reuse, analysis and interpretation, as well as forming the basis for machine learning applications. Thus, the ability to read, analyze, and communicate with data, and to make decisions and discern meaning also are likewise critical skills. While not all CMU students will go on to be data scientists or information specialists, data and information literacy are key areas of competency for CMU graduates of all disciplines.

Learning Outcomes

  • Critically evaluate data and information

  • Analyze data  and engage with information in and across communities of practice
