August 4 - 8, 2025

Hybrid - Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, PA USA
Gates/Hillman Center, 5000 Forbes Ave., Pittsburgh, PA 15213
Room 4405, 4th floor

The CASOS/IDeaS Summer Institute is an introduction to network science and how network science is enabled by artificial intelligence (AI).  Topics that will be covered include identification of key actors and groups, stance, network comparison, and network dynamics.  AI will be used to generate synthetic network data, label groups, and identify missing links in networks. Summer Institute will provide an overview of how network science can be used to overcome limitations in AI systems and how AI can be used to overcome limitations in network data and support analysis.  Much of the training will be hands-on and participants will be given data and technologies to analyze.  The data provided will be organized in scenarios that the participants will review during the week and produce insights related to these scenarios given the use of the AI enabled network science methods.
The Summer Institute is a five day workshop, Monday August 4th through Friday August 8th. Each day's instruction will be from 9:00am to 6:00pm US Eastern. In person attendance is strongly preferred, however, there is a remote training option.  Tools will be provided to the trainees with trial licenses to use during Summer Institute. In person attendees will work in small 2-3 person groups to produce a final presentation (slides, ie. powerpoint). Groups will not be coordinated for those working remotely. Summer Institute is a certificate program. Participants who attend at least 80% of the sessions, follow along in the hands-on sessions, and generate a final presentation showing learned results will get a certificate.

Curriculum: Final Agenda forthcoming

The hands-on curriculum builds on both social network and computational analysis techniques, and illustrates how to use these techniques to study social, organizational and policy issues. Final agenda will be posted in May, please check back for additional information.

Tools:

All participants will be given trial software for use during Summer Institute and a trial period following the event.
