Free Diver Research Using NIRS

Project overview

Free divers subject them selves to extreme conditions by going deep underwater while holding a single breath for multiple minutes each dive. In this project, we are using near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) that uses light to measure oxygen levels in the brain of divers while they are meters below. Some divers may unfortunately need to be rescued due to hypoxic blackout or "low oxygen." Using NIRS to measure these biometrics can allow for early warning detection for an impending blackout and preserve the safety of free divers.
