Carnegie Mellon University

Reaccreditation

Persistent pursuit of excellence to transform society

Carnegie Mellon University (CMU), since its founding, has been an institution committed to the persistent pursuit of excellence through research and education and using those efforts to make a positive impact on society. This focus has been operationalized in the new Strategic Framework, which serves as an appropriate foundation as CMU enters Self-Study and reaccreditation with the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE). As part of the reaccreditation process, which is required on an 8-year cycle, the Self-Study offers the opportunity for CMU to study and assess its current educational and operational practices with a focus on continued improvement.

Key aspects of the Self-Study outcomes address several key questions. Does CMU continue to reflect its mission, vision and values, as stated in the latest Strategic Framework? Does the institution align with MSCHE standards? As part of reaccreditation, expert representatives from selected colleges, universities and educational programs provide their insights to achieve a holistic analysis of CMU. CMU asks the community, including faculty, staff and students at all locations, programs and degree levels, to participate in the Self-Study by engaging in the process. Compiling information and evidence, as well as community feedback, allow the institution to use a data-driven approach to support findings and recommendations in the Self-Study report.

The reaccreditation process ensures that our university lives up to its legacy of providing a world-class educational experience focused on deep disciplinary knowledge and problem-solving. The process also ensures CMU continues to have a transformative impact on society through continual innovation in education, research, creativity and entrepreneurship. And, as a requirement by U.S. federal regulation, successful, periodic reaccreditation allows CMU to access certain federal programs, including federal aid programs for eligible undergraduate and graduate students.

Lisa previously co-chaired the 2016-18 self-study with fellow Co-Chair Amy Burkert.

As the chief administrative lead, Lisa co-leads the Steering Committee; provides guidance to Working Group Co-chairs on Standards 1, 2 and 7; and oversees the Verification of Compliance (VoC) process.

Lisa’s logistical responsibilities include functional leadership of the Coordinating Committee (CC), which serves as the organizational backbone for the daily operations and logistics of the Self-Study.  She has a lead role in coordinating with other CMU locations to ensureassure their preparedness for engagement, location-specific reports, materials, and visits, and she oversees the communication planning and efforts of the entire self-study. To accomplish these areas of responsibilities, Lisa relies on strong communication and collaboration skills, and Co-chair Amy Burkert, while supervising dedicated self-study staff and consultants, including the project coordinator, a communications lead and a dedicated professional writer.

She enjoys the many partnerships and relationships forged during the university-wide endeavor, the energy of a shared undertaking, and the learning inherent in uncovering aspects of the educational and operational efforts that align with the standards and expectations of the Middle States Commission on Higher Education.

Amy Burkert HeadshotAmy L. Burkert, PhD, the senior vice provost for academic initiatives and a teaching professor of biological sciences, has been appointed by President Jahanian and Provost Garrett as the co-chair and academic lead of Carnegie Mellon’s 2025-27 MSCHE Self-Study and reaccreditation process.

Amy brings to her academic co-chair role deep expertise and broad-ranging experience in educational program design, implementation, assessment, review, and iterative improvement that spans across all degree levels, delivery modalities, as well as deployment at local and global locations. She has been a faculty member at Carnegie Mellon since 1990 and, before becoming Senior Vice Provost, she was a program director, associate department head, assistant dean and then Vice Provost for Education for 14 years. She has been engaged in and served in leadership roles to advance educational innovation, general education reform, high-impact educational practices, academic advising and student success initiatives and organizations at local, regional, and national levels and has been recognized by numerous honors and awards in these domains.

With a career that spans more than four decades at Carnegie Mellon, Amy also has a deep understanding of the institution and its people, processes, policies and purpose. She looks forward to partnering again with co-chair, associate vice president and accreditation liaison officer, Lisa Krieg, as they build on the success and lessons learned from their work together as co-chairs of the 2016- 2018 reaccreditation process and years of collaboration as academic and administrative leaders. Amy also appreciates the opportunity to work closely with members of the Coordinating Committee, Steering Committee, Working Groups and Guiding Principle leads in collaboration to engage the entire CMU community in a reflective and evidence-informed comprehensive institutional review - mapping to the MSCHE Standards and Guiding Principles and also grounded in our mission and strategic framework. She appreciates the holistic, student-centered, and purpose-driven approach taken by Carnegie Mellon to persistently pursue excellence and transformative impact in education, research and service through study, assessment, and continuous iterative improvement.

The Fourteenth Edition of the Standards for Accreditation and Requirements of Affiliation newly outlines five principles which guide the analysis in each of the seven standards because of their importance in higher education:

Guiding Principles

  1. Application of the Standards within the Context of an Institution’s Mission and Goals
  2. Centrality of the Student Experience
  3. Reflection on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
  4. Emphasis on Data and Evidence-based Decision-making
  5. Innovation as an Essential Part of Continuous Improvement

The CMU Self-Study has appointed internal experts for each of the Five Guiding Principles who serve as consultants across all working groups and committees.

What is a self-study?

What is a Self-Study?

The MSCHE self-study process offers benefits to CMU beyond meeting accreditation requirements. It provides a valuable opportunity to assess the institution’s current state, identify areas for improvement and develop strategies for continuous growth and innovation. This process fosters a culture of self-reflection, encourages engagement from the entire institutional community, and ultimately helps institutions better education their students and serve the wider community.

Self-Study Design

Self-Study Design

The University’s Self-Study Design guides CMU’s Steering Committee and Working Groups in conceptualizing and organizing relevant tasks. Following the latest MSCHE guidance for Standards for Accreditation and Requirements of Affiliation, the Self-Study Design communicates information about the plan and approach to institutional constituencies, the Middle States Commission staff and the Team Chair.

Importance of community engagement

Community Engagement

Throughout the reaccreditation process, CMU’s Self-Study Co-Chairs and Steering Committee members update institutional stakeholders about progress made during the Self-Study, as outlined in the detailed communications plan, gather input and feedback, and promote a transparent process. They oversee the report preparation and solicit university review and feedback through governance and advisory bodies, including student leadership, to promote understanding of the process and incorporate varied perspectives and voices. The community is also engaged during the Team Chair’s Preliminary Visit and the Team Visit.

What is a peer team review?

What is a Peer Team Review?

The peer team review plays a vital role in university accreditation, providing key advantages for both the institution and the accreditation process itself, including external validation and quality assurance, benchmarking and best practices, enhanced accountability, and the use of data-driven decision-making. Team selection is informed by the institution’s Self-Study Design and includes experts that align with Middle States’ standards. MSCHE seeks to balance peer teams with varied professional experiences, specific areas of higher ed expertise, and institutional types by those with no known conflicts of interest.

Team chair preliminary visit to campus

Team Chair Preliminary Visit to Campus

The Team Chair visits CMU’s main campus four to six months before the On-Site Evaluation Team Visit. This day-long visit introduces the Team Chair to the institution, confirms that the self-study process and Evidence Inventory will support a useful On-Site Evaluation Visit, addresses practical preparation for the full team visit, and discusses requirements and logistics for visits to the branch campus and select U.S. and international additional locations. The Team Chair’s Preliminary Visit assists the institution in understanding how the team will operate while the Chair plans how to best deploy the team.

Peer team visits

Peer Team Visits

Team members visit CMU’s main and branch campuses and select U.S. and international additional locations as part of reaccreditation. During the three-day visit to the Pittsburgh campus, the Peer Team assesses the institution in light of its mission and Self-Study Report and materials. They meet with faculty, students, staff, administrators, trustees and other community members to confirm and clarify information while collecting additional perspectives. At the end of the Team Visit, the Team Chair delivers an oral version of the team report. CMU constituencies will be invited to hear the oral report with the team’s observations, commendations, collegial advice and/or recommendations.

Reaccreditation

Reaccreditation

After the Team Visit, the Team Chair presents CMU with a draft report. CMU has the opportunity to correct any factual errors before the Team Chair submits the report to MSCHE. The Commission then analyzes all the accreditation materials and any other appropriate information.  Ultimately, the Commission determines the reaccreditation status, informing CMU leadership and updating the institution’s statement of accreditation status (SAS) on the MSCHE website.  At this point, the next 8-year cycle begins again!

Self-Study Organizational Framework

Self-Study Organizational Framework

CMU’s Self-Study efforts rely on existing organizational structures and others established specifically to lead it. For example:
The University Leadership Council serves as the primary oversight body for CMU’s Self-Study effort, guiding the process to advance university goals and shaping the final recommendations.
The Steering Committee provides guidance to Working Groups, oversees the report preparation and solicit university review and feedback.
The Working Groups - one for each standard - will examine each standard and its criteria in the context of the CMU mission and strategic priorities.
