In conjunction with Carnegie Mellon’s Leonard Gelfand Center for Service Learning and Outreach, the National Science Foundation’s Research Experiences for Teachers (RET) program,  and the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection’s Environmental Education Program, the WPBC is working to develop an interdisciplinary middle school curriculum, using brownfields as a platform. By learning about the brownfields in their own neighborhoods, students explore land-use decisions made in previous generations and analyze their impact on the current natural and built environments. As an integrated learning platform, brownfields allow students to learn about history, socio-economics, political decision-making and other subjects in addition to the more obvious subjects of math and science.

Please download our brownfield brochures and share them with elementary, middle, and high school students!
