Students, President Cohon To Shine at Campus Superstars Tonight

Carnegie Mellon musical theater majors Casey Cott, Rayquila Durham, Jean Floradin, Emily Koch, Amanda Smith and Jimmy Mason, are six of the 10 finalists competing for a $5,000 grand prize in tonight's (March 21) "Campus Superstar" competition at Carnegie Music Hall. "Campus Superstar" is an American Idol-like singing competition run by the Hillel Jewish University Center. President Jared L. Cohon will be honored during the competition by event organizers for his efforts to increase diversity at CMU, including the establishment of The Pomegranate, a dining facility in the University Center offering kosher food that meets the dietary requirements of the vast majority of CMU’s observant Jews. Nominations for MCS Staff Awards Due Tomorrow

Please join Dean Fred Gilman in honoring Mellon College of Science (MCS) staff for their dedication and service to MCS. The awards ceremony will be at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, May 3. Staff will be honored in the following categories: MCS Merit Award, Rookie Award, Special Award and Outstanding Achievement Award. Nominations may be made by anyone in the MCS community, including administrators, faculty, staff and students. Tartans Host Fun Field Day for Kids, Sunday, April 14

Carnegie Mellon’s Athletic Department will host its third annual Field Day from 12 to 3 p.m., Sunday, April 14 in Skibo Gym and Gesling Stadium. Children between the ages of 6 and 12 are invited to come, participate and have fun doing football, soccer, basketball and track drills with CMU student-athletes. T-shirts and lunch will be provided. Staff Discount Available for Comedy Show

Comedian Steve Hofstetter, the original writer for collegehumor.com, will perform at Pittsburgh's Hard Rock Cafe at 9 and 11 p.m. on Thursday, May 23. Tickets are $20, but a limited number of $5 tickets is available for Carnegie Mellon staff. Tickets may be purchased at http://www.stevehofstetter.com/calendartemplate.cfm?Venue=1760 with promo code PITTHFIVE. The show is for mature audiences.

Road Closures for Scott Hall Construction

There will be multiple road closures in the coming weeks related to the Scott Hall construction.

  • Roberts Road will be closed from March 25 - April 6 from the FMS pedestrian bridge to the top of the drive near Scaife Hall. 
  • FMS Drive, the section of Roberts Road from the CIC to FMS, will be closed April 8-10 from 6:30 a.m. – 5 p.m.
  • Roberts Road will be closed April 29 through the duration of the Scott Hall project (October 2015) from the FMS pedestrian bridge to the top of the drive near Scaife Hall. 
  • Access to Roberts Hall loading dock will be maintained; deliveries will be coordinated. 
  • During these closures there will be no pedestrian traffic, thru traffic or parking at specified locations.

Undergrads Switching to Google for Email and Calendar

Computing Services has announced that beginning this fall all Pittsburgh undergraduate students will transition to Google for their email and calendar functions. Google Apps is easy to use and familiar to many in the campus community. Google Apps provides:

  • Email — 25GB of email storage (@andrew.cmu.edu email addresses);
  • Calendar;
  • Contacts — integrated CMU directory;
  • Drive — 5GB of file storage;
  • Documents — Sheets, Docs, Slides.

Register for Student Employee Appreciation Lunch

The Student Employee Appreciation Lunch, which recognizes student employees and their invaluable contributions to Carnegie Mellon, will be held from 12 – 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, April 10 in Rangos Hall, UC. The lunch gives you an opportunity to get to know your student employee(s) and to say “Thanks!” A buffet lunch will be served that includes vegetarian entrees. Entertainment will be provided by students from the world-renowned School of Drama. The cost is $5 per person. Buggy Freeroll Practices Scheduled

Spring Buggy freeroll practices will take place on Saturdays (6 - 8:50 a.m.) and Sundays (6 - 9 a.m.) on Tech Street, Frew Street and Schenley Drive (weather permitting). During these times, vehicles will not be able to access or park on these roads. The Sweepstakes Committee will work with Pittsburgh Police Officers to tow any vehicles parked on the above roads during practice times. Please contact the Sweepstakes Committee at buggy@andrew.cmu.edu with any issues or concerns.

The practice dates are as follows (weather permitting):
March: 23, 24, 30, 31
April: 6, 7, 13, 14

Save the Dates
Annual Push Practice Begins. There will be buggy practices occurring every Sunday through Thursday from 11 p.m. to 3 a.m. on Tech Street and Frew Street. The purpose of these practices is for Buggy Pushers to practice pushing the buggies up Tech Street and along Frew Street. There is no freeroll down Schenley Drive.

Spring Carnival – Buggy Races: April 19 & 20 (Rain Date: April 21)
Margaret Morrison, Tech Street, Schenley Drive, Frew Street, Panther Hollow Bridge, & East & West Circuit Road will be closed from 5 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Save a Life: AED Training Class Scheduled

An AED training classes have been scheduled for those who have never had the training or for those whose certifications have expired or are about to expire. The classes are:

  • April 12, 10 a.m., Dowd Room, University Center

To register, go to http://www.cmu.edu/ehs and click on the Training tab at the top of the page, then go to AED Training. The link to the registration page is at the end of the course description. The classes are open to all students, faculty and staff. Class sizes are limited, so register early.
