Free Skin Cancer Screening May 9

Did you know that skin cancer is the most common cancer in the U.S. and more than 2 million people are diagnosed with skin cancer each year? University Health Services is offering free skin cancer screenings (skin exams) from 8:30 – 11 a.m., Wednesday, May 9 at the University Health Center, 1st floor, Morewood Gardens E-Tower. Magazine Earns Communicator Awards

Carnegie Mellon Today has received five 2012 Communicator Awards, a competition sponsored by the International Academy of the Visual Arts. The annual competition receives more than 6,000 entries from creative professionals. Carnegie Mellon Today was awarded an Award of Excellence for Cover Design and awards of Distinction for Magazine-Educational Institution, Overall Design, Feature Article and Column.

Qatar Campus Names Thorpe Award Winners

Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar has announced the recipients of the 2012 Charles E. Thorpe Distinguished Service Awards, a tribute to the spirit of teamwork and dedication embodied by the staff at the Qatar campus. Individual staff members and teams of colleagues whose work has had a significant impact on the university are recognized for their outstanding performance and commitment to excellence through the awards program. Awards are given in five categories: Dedication, Service to Students, Innovation, Commitment to the Community and Outstanding Newcomer.

This year’s winners are:

  • Carol Miller –Innovation
  • Jill Duffy – Service to Students
  • Eleanore Adiong – Dedication
  • Otto Chacon – Commitment to the Community
  • Shayan NoorMohamed – Outstanding Newcomer

Bob Monroe received an honorary Thorpe Award for University Citizenship.

Mortar Board Inducts 32 New Members

Thirty-two juniors have been inducted into Carnegie Mellon's Mortar Board chapter, a senior service honor society. The new members were selected based on dedication to scholarship, leadership and service to CMU and the Pittsburgh community. Additionally, Sharon Carver, teaching professor of psychology and CMU Mortar Board adviser, was made an honorary member of the society. 2012 Andy Award Nominations

Nominations for the 2012 Andy Awards are now being accepted. The Andy Awards, named for Andrew Carnegie and Andrew Mellon, are a tribute to the spirit of teamwork and dedication embodied by the staff at Carnegie Mellon. Individual staff members and teams of colleagues whose work has had a significant impact on the university are recognized for their outstanding performance and commitment to excellence through the Andy Awards program. Awards are given in six categories: Dedication, Commitment to Students, Innovation, Culture and University Citizenship, and Community Contributions. All nominations must be submitted by July 10. Parking Open Enrollment Ends Friday

Open enrollment (click on Enrollment in the left-hand navigation column) for campus parking permits ends Friday, May 4.  Anyone wanting an individual permit to park on campus during the coming year, including those seeking a disability or universal permit, must apply using your Andrew ID and the online system. Individuals applying for a carpool must complete a paper application, which can be faxed (412-268-7825) or returned to the University Center Parking Office. Carnegie Mellon Women's Association Seeks Nominations for Officer Elections

The Carnegie Mellon Women's Association (CMWA) will hold its annual meeting and officer elections from noon to 1 p.m., Thursday, May 24 in the Peter Room, University Center. Members are invited to bring a brown bag lunch, but desserts will be provided. Nominations are open for president, treasurer and the vice president of events and are due to Emily Half via email at ehalf@andrew.cmu.edu by Thursday, May 10.
