2012 Andy Award Nominations

Nominations for the 2012 Andy Awards are now being accepted. The Andy Awards, named for Andrew Carnegie and Andrew Mellon, are a tribute to the spirit of teamwork and dedication embodied by the staff at Carnegie Mellon. Individual staff members and teams of colleagues whose work has had a significant impact on the university are recognized for their outstanding performance and commitment to excellence through the Andy Awards program. Awards are given in six categories: Dedication, Commitment to Students, Innovation, Culture and University Citizenship, and Community Contributions. All nominations must be submitted by July 10. Parking Open Enrollment is Under Way

Open enrollment for campus parking permits is now under way online (click on Enrollment in the left-hand navigation column) through May 4.  Anyone wanting an individual permit to park on campus during the coming year, including those seeking a disability or universal permit, must apply using your Andrew ID and the online system. Individuals applying for a carpool must complete a paper application, which can be faxed (412-268-7825) or returned to the University Center Parking Office. Carnegie Mellon Women's Association Seeks Nominations for Officer Elections

The Carnegie Mellon Women's Association (CMWA) will hold its annual meeting and officer elections from noon to 1 p.m., Thursday, May 24 in the Peter Room, University Center. Members are invited to bring a brown bag lunch, but desserts will be provided. Nominations are open for president, treasurer and the vice president of events and are due to Emily Half via email at ehalf@andrew.cmu.edu by Thursday, May 10. Silicon Valley Hosts Disaster Workshops, May 2-3

Carnegie Mellon Silicon Valley will be hosting workshops May 2-3 as part of the Bay Area Regional Disaster Resilience Initiative. The events will focus on response and recovery challenges associated with essential service providers and on sharing communication capabilities and best practices. Libraries To Circulate iPads, Sewing Machines

Last year, the University Libraries introduced circulating Kindles loaded with a variety of books, available for 14-day check out at Hunt, Mellon Institute and Sorrells E&S libraries. More: http://guides.library.cmu.edu/kindle. Now the libraries have added iPad2s and portable sewing machines to circulate.

  • iPad2s at Sorrells — Ten iPad2s were purchased for a pilot project, funded by a grant obtained from the Berkman Faculty Development Committee by librarian Donna Beck. Nine iPad2s are available at the Sorrells Library circulation desk for seven-day check out, and one is reserved for in-library use only. All of the iPads2s are pre-loaded with a wide variety of apps; suggestions for additional apps are welcome. More: http://guides.library.cmu.edu/iPad2
  • Sewing machines at Hunt — Two Singer 3300 Series portable sewing machines were purchased from the dean's discretionary fund (gift monies) at the request of students in the College of Fine Arts. They are available at the Hunt Library circulation desk for seven-day check out. Each machine circulates with these peripherals: Singer manual, DVD, operation instructions, a Quick Start Guide, bobbins, needles, a walking foot and a side cutter.

Student Employees Enjoy Appreciation Lunch

The Student Employee Appreciation Lunch was held on April 11 in Rangos Ballroom, University Center. The nominated student employees were: Dimitry Ayzenberg, Brian Choe, Karen Choi, Francesca Fenzi, Alysia Finger, Aditya Goyal, Brittani Grant, Griffin Harbach, Lindsay McGregor, Chuck McKain, Nicole Ogurek, and Ariel Solomon. Lindsay McGregor was honored as the Carnegie Mellon representative for the National Student Employment Association Award. English Reinstates Honors Society

On April 4, 50 outstanding Carnegie Mellon Department of English students were inducted into Sigma Tau Delta, the International English Honor Society. The event marked the reinstating of CMU's Sigma Tau Delta Omega Tau Chapter. Read more and view photos at http://bit.ly/J2NUiP.
