FAQs: COVID-19 Related

Immigration regulations and policies are subject to change and may change rapidly without much advance notice, especially during the global pandemic. OIE recommends that students routinely review these FAQs and stay tuned to their email.

Carnegie Mellon University requires all enrolled students to be vaccinated for COVID-19.

For additional details regarding vaccinations, visit the University Health Services website.

As of March 2022, Carnegie Mellon's current service posture is "Transitional," in which in-person instruction is the predominant course delivery modality. Course delivery modality is indicated in Student Information Online (SIO) course schedules.

According to the most recent guidance provided from the Student Exchange and Visitor Program (SEVP), students are expected to comply with the normal immigration regulations that require on-campus, in-person study.

More information on the recent issuance of SEVP guidance for the 2021-2022 academic year can be found on OIE’s News & Updates webpage.

On April 26, 2021, the Student Exchange and Visitor Program (SEVP) updated its COVID-19 guidance to reflect the 2021-22 academic year, which continued to allow schools to issue electronic I-20s for students to use at visa appointments and for travel purposes.  On October 12, 2021, SEVP issued Policy Guidance formally adopting the electronic transmission of I-20s. Therefore, CMU will continue to send I-20s to students’ Andrew email accounts.  When you receive your I-20, print and sign the document, and carry it with you when you apply for your visa and when you travel to the U.S. Make sure to carry the printed copy in your carry-on luggage so you can present it at the port of entry.
