Carnegie Mellon Alumni Association Honors Frank Millero with 2003 Distinguished Achievement Award
 PITTSBURGH—Frank Millero, professor of marine and physical chemistry and associate dean at the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science at the University of Miami, has been selected to receive the 2003 Distinguished Achievement Award from the Carnegie Mellon Alumni Association. The award, one of the highest honors bestowed upon a Carnegie Mellon alumnus, recognizes Millero’s distinguished service and professional accomplishments.
Over a 35-year career, Millero, who earned his Ph.D. in physical chemistry from Carnegie Mellon in 1965, has contributed greatly to chemical oceanography. Millero’s graduate research focused on the thermodynamics of the dissociation of acids. Today, his research toward understanding the chemical dynamics of seawater has been recognized with numerous awards.
Millero will accept his award at this year’s Alumni Awards Ceremony at 7 p.m., Friday, Oct. 24, in conjunction with this year’s Homecoming Weekend. He will make a research presentation, “Carbon Dioxide System in the Oceans,” from 11:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m., Oct. 24, in the Mellon Institute Social Room.
Millero’s research characterizes the global carbon dioxide (CO2) cycle in the world’s oceans. Large amounts of CO2 released into the atmosphere during fossil fuel burning are directly related to global warming. Because oceans absorb CO2, they serve as a natural “sink” to remove this gas from the air. Millero is investigating the chemical dynamics of this process, providing knowledge that could assist efforts to reduce global warming.
Millero, who earned his bachelor’s degree at The Ohio State University in 1961, has received a number of awards for his teaching and research accomplishments including the Office of Naval Research Educator Award (1991-95), Sigma Xi Professor of the Year (1989), the Florida Academy of Science Medal (1991), a Gold Medal from Rudjer Boskovic Institute (1988), a Distinguished Faculty Scholar Award (1996), the Provost Scholarly Activity Award (1998), induction into the Distinguished Alumni Hall of Fame at Warren High School (1995), American Geophysical Union Fellow (1999) and the American Chemistry Society Geochemistry Division Medal (2001).
Millero was named a Fellow of the Geochemical Society and the European Association for Geochemistry (2000), has served on the National Academy of Sciences Ocean Science Board (1981-83), is the Editor-in-Chief of Marine Chemistry. Millero directs the University of Miami’s Marine Physical Chemistry Group. He has authored numerous publications on marine chemistry.
