Recommended Configuration Settings

For Mavericks to function properly within our computing environment, we recommend the configuration settings below.

Ensure Software Update Runs Daily

  1. Select System Preferences from the Apple menu or Dock. 
  2. Select App Store. If necessary, click the lock icon to make changes. Enter an Administrator username and password when prompted. This is the Administrator account for your computer.
  3. Click Automatically check for updates.
  4. Ensure the following options are "checked" the following: :
    • Download newly available updates in the background.
    • Install app updates.
    • Install system data files and security updates.
  5. Click the back arrow to return to System Preferences.

Set Download and Firewall Options

  1. Select System Preferences from the Apple menu or Dock, if not already open.
  2. Select Security & Privacy.
  3. Click General and check the following:
    • Require password and choose immediately from the drop-down menu.
    • Disable automatic login.
    • Allow application downloaded from: Anywhere.
  4. Click Firewall. If the firewall is not on, click Start or Turn Firewall On.
  5. Click Firewall Options.
  6. Verify the following settings:
    • Uncheck - Block all incoming connection.
    • Check - Automatically allow signed software to receive connections.
    • Uncheck - Enable stealth mode.
  7. Click OK to return to System Preferences.

Set Advanced Network Options

  1. Select System Preferences from the Apple menu or Dock, if not already open.
  2. Select Network.
  3. Click Ethernet > Advanced > DNS.
  4. Click the + to add the following search domains:
    • cmu.edu
    • ad.cmu.edu
    • andrew.ad.cmu.edu
  5. Click OK.
  6. Select WiFi > Advanced > DNS.
  7. Click the + to add the following search domains:
    • cmu.edu
    • ad.cmu.edu
    • andrew.ad.cmu.edu
  8. Click OK and then Apply.
  9. To prevent further changes, click the lock icon and close the window.
