Let's get started with some important onboarding information.
Your hiring department will provide you with a checklist of tasks that must be completed when starting employment at Carnegie Mellon University.

Certain onboarding tasks are required before you can:
- Obtain an Andrew ID (CMU's network ID and email)
- Obtain a CMU ID Card from the HUB
- Enroll in health, welfare, and retirement benefits (if applicable)
- Establish direct deposit payment elections
- Declare tax withholdings
Form I-9 for Employment Eligibility Verification
When hired, you will be prompted to complete the Form I-9 for Employment Eligibility Verification.
All employees are required to complete the Form I-9 within three (3) days of their employment start date.
There are two sections of the Form I-9 process:
- Section 1 - Provide your personal information (this step is usually completed in Workday)
- Section 2 - Present original versions of Acceptable Personal Documentation for the Form I-9 [.pdf] (must be completed in person at CMUWorks Service Center)

E-Verify Compliance Notification
Depending on the projects to which you are assigned, Carnegie Mellon University may be required to electronically verify your employment eligibility using the federally-sponsored service E-Verify.

Immigration Reform and Control Act (IRCA)
All workers are required to provide Carnegie Mellon University with documents establishing personal identity and employment eligibility within three (3) days of hire date.
Under federal law, failure to comply with IRCA will result in termination of the employment.

Your Social Security Number
Your Social Security Number is required for accurate payroll processing and proper tax filing with federal, state, and local tax authorities.
Be sure to provide your Social Security Number as soon as possible by calling the CMUWorks Service Center at 412-268-4600. Do not send your SSN by email.
Apply for a Social Security Number
Employees who need to apply for a Social Security Number should contact the Office of International Education.
