SoArch Alumnus Aftyn Giles Hired as Pittsburgh Sustainability Coordinator
Replaces Lindsay BaxterMayor Luke Ravenstahl on Thursday announced the hiring of the city's new sustainability coordinator.
Aftyn Giles, 26, of Homewood, will work on city government's greening, energy-efficiency, recycling and other conservation measures and help community groups with their own sustainability efforts.
She replaces Lindsay Baxter, who resigned last winter. The position pays about $45,000 a year.
Ms. Giles has a bachelor's degree in architecture and international relations and a master's degree in sustainable design from Carnegie Mellon University. She also has a graduate certificate in project management from DeVry University's Keller Graduate School of Management and is nearing completion of a master's degree there.
"Over the last 30 years, Pittsburgh has undergone an economic, environmental, and quality-of-life transformation," Mr. Ravenstahl said. "My goal is to continue that positive momentum, and key to that is ensuring our city stays on the forefront of the green movement. In addition to leveraging Ms. Giles' architectural and sustainable design experience, her work as an active community member will help to drive sustainable practices into our neighborhoods."
