Tepper School's Linda Argote Named 2024 AAAS Fellow

Thomas Lord Professor of Organizational Behavior and Theory Linda Argote at Carnegie Mellon University’s Tepper School of Business was elected as a 2024 fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS).

Argote is an internationally recognized expert in organizational learning. Her research has significantly advanced research and practice on group and organizational learning, memory and knowledge transfer, or the spread of lessons learned in one organizational unit to another. Her article with Eric Darr and Dennis Epple, “The Acquisition, Transfer and Depreciation of Knowledge in Service Organizations: Productivity in Franchises,” was chosen as one of the most influential articles published in Management Science during its first 50 years.

Similarly, her article with Paul Ingram, “Knowledge Transfer in Organizations: A Basis for Competitive Advantage in Firms,” was recognized as one of the most influential articles published in Organizational Behavior and Human Decision Processes during its first 50 years. Her current research, a collaboration with physicians at the University of Pittsburgh Medical School, investigates the role of transactive memory systems in improving the performance of hospital trauma resuscitation teams.

Argote synthesized her work and related research in Organizational Learning: Creating, Retaining and Transferring Knowledge (Kluwer, 1999; 2^nd ed, Springer, 2013), a finalist for the Terry Book Award of the Academy of Management. She developed a popular elective on organizational learning at the Tepper School that is a vehicle for moving research findings into the classroom.

Argote served as Editor-in-Chief of Organization Science, Departmental Editor at Management Science, and Vice-President for Publications of the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS). She also served as Senior Associate Dean for Faculty and Research at the Tepper School. Argote is a Fellow of the Academy of Management, the Association for Psychological Science (APS) and INFORMS. She was recognized with the Joseph E. McGrath Lifetime Achievement award for the study of groups by the International Network for Group Research (INGRoup).
